German artist Anselm Kiefer bought his old silk factory at 'La Ribaute' in Barjac in 1993 and over the years it has metamorphosed into an incredible theatre of creativity. Talking about his property in Barjac he said;
“I believe above all that I wanted to build the palace of my memory, because my memory is my only homeland”
Surrounded by 35 hectares of 'garrigue' grasslands overlooking the town nestled down in the valley he has raised glass houses full of sculptures, dug kilometers of underground tunnels and constructed huge amphitheatres of concrete.
It is possible to visit the property only by special arrangement but Kiefer, who currently lives in Paris, would like to open it to the public. In order to do this he wants to create a Franco-German charitable foundation. This project is being studied by the Ministry of Culture in both Germany and France. Let's hope!
